Laverne was family. Although she was my maternal second cousin, we were together from early on. She lived with her dad and two brothers two houses down from my grandmother. I loved visiting and playing with her in that big house. My parents moved from the farm, and her dad moved from the big house, and we became neighbors again. Her dad was the bus superintendent and a great baseball coach, so we spent a lot of time with our brothers (they tried to avoid us) playing. Laverne left VHS early, I married right out of high school, and we lost track of each other. I was shocked last year when her brother called about her death - she was living about 20 miles from my daughter. It's sad that we lose contact with those who meant so much to us when we were young.
