In Memory

Barbara Carsner (Milam)

Below is a beautiful eulogy posted on Facebook 25 July 22 by Barbara's son Bruce Milam:

With the heaviest of heart, I wanted to let everyone know that my sweet, sweet mother, Barbara Carsner Milam, passed away today. It was peaceful, free of pain and on her own terms, which is all we can ask for.

Many of you know that my Mom and I shared an incredibly close connection for the entirety of my life. She was the truest kind of optimist, incredibly intelligent and took a genuine interest in everyone she met. I never hesitated to introduce her to my friends, who all quickly came to consider her their own friend, or, in some cases, a second mother. I've attached the photos I could find to reflect some of those relationships, but there are so many more that are in printed vs. digital photos. Everyone loved her spirit and humor.

She lost the lottery when it came to physical health and overcame more in her life than seems possible. As I grew up, she was very open with the fact that she believed she would have a shortened life span - who would have ever believed that she'd get 79 brilliant years out of that body? She was able to see me come out, make mistakes and ultimately find true happiness with Adam Knippa Milam, whom she absolutely adored (who wouldn't). She and my Dad helped raise our two boys and I remember thinking that ever day they get to spend with her is another day where her amazing spirit can pass through to them.

COVID gave us a gift in that she lived with us for the majority of the past 3 years - time I will cherish - we had a ball as a 5 person unit. We introduced her to Schitts Creek, lemon drop martinis, Rupauls Drag Race, Friday Family Movie Night, Stranger Things and the 5 hour drive between Seattle and Bend. We made some incredible memories while she was still in relatively good health.

I got 54 wonderful years with her as my Mom. How unbelievably lucky was I? She was absolutely the best human I've ever known and I will miss her terribly, as I know many of you will. With the heaviest of heart, I wanted to let everyone know that my sweet, sweet mother, Barbara Carsner Milam, passed away today. It was peaceful, free of pain and on her own terms, which is all we can ask for.

The world has lost a beautiful soul.  Barbara, probably the most intelligent of all our VHS grads, has left us smarter and kinder simply by being here.  I will miss you, knowing that you called the shots to the end of your life on this earth. I will miss seeing your comments, "thumbs up" on my leftist Facebook posts and I wish love and peace to your beautiful family.
